Going steady

Today during assembly, we had a sexuality education talk on going steady. I felt that this was a very interesting and relevant talk as i know at least one friend who has openly admitted that he was in a BGR relationship, even though he knew his parents does not approve of it.

Today's talk was to the point and i think it helped me understand more about the difference between love and infatuation. That would definitely help me make the right choice in the future and prevent me from making bad decisions now.

Sexuality Education talks are definitely helpful to us as we are all going through puberty, a turbulent time. We all need some form of guidance and help from people who have been through it. These talks are crucial in preventing us from making the wrong decisions.

LKY's comments T2P9

Taken from the Straits Times:
Mr Lee, who had first spoken on the contest there on Friday, yesterday reiterated that Aljunied voters must “accept the consequences of their actions” if they voted the PAP out.

“You must expect the PAP to look after PAP constituencies first,” he said.

When asked if his strong words might create a backlash against the PAP, he said simply: “I am 87, I am speaking the truth. I do not want to be hypocritical. You look at Hougang, and you think Hougang is better than all the other constituencies? It is the job of the PAP to look after its own constituencies first, right?”

This is obviously a threat to keep the PAP in power. They are threatening to not provide you with services that though are not necessary, are however leaving you less equipped and thus at a loss as compared to other estates in terms of property value and convenience. Just to keep in power.

I think that the PAP has no right to favour its own constituencies over those that belong to other parties. The money that they have is not the PAP's money and it does not belong only to the people in PAP constituencies. The money used is the money of the taxpayers in Singapore.

Why i like hurdling T2P8

I like hurdling because of two reasons. Firstly, because it helps level the playing field for those who cannot run as fast as other people. Hurdling requires training and practice. Although talent helps, the trainings are still the most crucial part of perfecting your hurdling technique.

Next, I like hurdling because I cannot run as fast as most of the other trackers. Luckily, i can hurdle better than some of them, which helps me catch up to them. Without hurdles, there would be nothing i can do in track.

Saturday

Trainings T2P7

When i first joined the sprints team, i hated trainings. Trainings mostly involved running and doing weights. I did not like it because they were quite boring and repetitive. What made me dislike track was that we had to train during holidays!

Soon, i realised the that i would learn something new during the june holidays. I would learn how to hurdle. Hurdling can be for two races, 400m or 100m. The 100m hurdles focuses more on technique, and how to minimize the amount of time the hurdle slows you down by. 400m hurdles focuses on the steps before the hurdles, how to plan them correctly so that you do not have to slow down to cross the hurdle. Your technique does not have to be so good.

After this, i enjoyed going for trainings. I love hurdling. I feel great every time i cross a hurdle. Although there are still trainings where we do running exercises, i try to do my best for these as i know that they will help me hurdle better.

Track and Field. T2P6

My CCA is track and field. When i first joined, i was feeling both excited and disappointed. Excited because i heard that track and field was the best CCA in Hwa Chong, disappointed because i knew that i didn't join track and field by choice. In the weeks that we could have gone for CCA trials, i chose to go home as i kept thinking that i still would have time to go for trials. Eventually, i ended up with only one option i could choose: Track and field. This was because track and field trials were during PE.

Everybody spent the first 2 months training together, under Coach Chu. He is an excellent coach. Most coach specialize in training a certain events, but Coach Chu can train anybody for any event, that is why he was chosen to train the new sec ones. In these 2 months, i found out that i was quite good at jumping although i was not a very good runner. At the end of the mass training period, we were all assigned to our specific events. I was utterly disappointed that i was not chosen to be in the jumps team. Instead, i was chosen to join the sprints team.

After training with the sprints team for a year, i have grown to like it and enjoy trainings more.

Should there be a law against leaving your child alone at home? T2P5

I believe that there should be a law punishing parents who leave their child alone at home, especially if the child is below primary school age. There could be many things that can happen if a young child is left alone at home without adult supervision.

A child might get injured if left without adult supervision. There are many things that a child could do to injure himself or herself, as they do not take care of themselves properly.

If a stranger with ill intentions realises that the child is left at home alone, he could break into the house or tempt the child to go out, and the stranger would be able to do anything he wants to the child.

Thus, i believe that there should be a law that punishes parents who leave their children alone at home without any supervision. If both parents are working, they could either leave their kids with one of their neighbours or hire a maid to take care of the kid. If both these methods do not work, they can also leave them in a child care centre.

Stomp incident. T2P4

This post is regarding the recent incident that happened on Stomp!. A photo of a Hwa Chong boy eating an ice cream on a bus was posted by a member of the public. The title of the post was 'Even students from elite school can't follow no-eating rule on bus'.

I feel that the student should not have brought the ice cream onto the bus. If he did not, this whole thing would not have happened. I believe that the boy bought the ice cream from outside HCI, and he had not finished it when his bus came. He could have either threw the ice cream away or chose to miss the bus. Even though he would have wasted $1 or wait an extra 10 to 15 minutes for the bus, he would not have tarnished the school's name.

Although it was the student's fault for doing this, but i think that this is not the real reason Stomp should be used for. Nowadays, Stomp is just used by people to post pictures of people doing things that they deem unacceptable in public, especially students. This should not be what stomp is used for.

A day in the life of WWII

17 June 1942

4 months and 2 days after Singapore fell to the Japanese. Life is getting harder now. The Japanese are mistreating us, and giving the malays all the benefits such as extra food and water. I think they are doing this so that we will be divided. Prices of food are also going up now, and many people are selling essential food products on the black market at extremely high prices. Due to the lack of food, I'm feeding the children first, they are more important. It's time to collect my rations! I'll write again tomorrow.

Photo 1

'Man down! Man down!' a soldier yelled. I rushed over to him. The smell of smoke and sulfur was strong in the air. The injured man was leaning against some debris, surrounded by spent bullet casings. He was smelly and sweaty from all the fighting he had been doing. We had already been out here for days, waiting for reinforcements to arrive. As i got a closer look, i realised that he was quite severely injured. A bullet scraped his neck and a his arm was broken. I immediately started to clean his wound and put a sling around his arm.

Should Singapore or any other countries use nuclear energy as a source of electricity? T2P3

After the Japanese tsunami and the Fukushima Nuclear accidents, many people are saying that nuclear energy are unsafe and that nuclear generators should be shut down. China has put several active nuclear projects on hold for review. Germany and other countries have simply cancelled their nuclear programmes.

I believe Singapore should not have nuclear power plants. Even though Mr Lee Hsien Loong referred to nuclear energy as an "important part of the solution to mankind's energy problems". Singaporeans will not be safe if we had nuclear reactors and they failed, as Singapore is such a small country. The radioactive material would spread throughout the whole island, endangering anyone in Singapore. People would argue that nuclear power will soon become a very important source of energy as oil prices start to rise. I believe that there are other alternatives to this, such as solar and wind energy. A few Singaporean entrepreneurs and scientists are also researching on generating energy using algae. There are many other forms of energy production methods we can choose from besides nuclear power.

Music T2P2

Many teenagers, including myself, like to listen to the pop and rock songs which is the norm nowadays. Many celebrity singers like Katy Parry and Justin Bieber have become world famous for the songs that they have composed and sung. These singers have many fans who are extremely devoted to them and some have even created fan groups to support them.

However, in the age of digitalisation, many teenagers have forgotten about the 'old' classics in the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods. Many famous composers during that period like Bach, Beethoven and Chopin have all been forgotten by this generation, Z. For example, if I ask my classmates if they know what Beethoven's famous Symphony No. 5 is, most of them would probably say no. I feel that this is a very sad thing as many of these pieces are actually very famous and it would be a waste if my generation does not appreciate these famous works and not pass this on to our kids.

Now, we consider the songs of our parent's generations like the Beatles old and outdated, I wonder, if in the future, these masterworks of the great composers will be long forgotten and the songs of today considered the classics.

Founder's Day CIP

Hwa Chong students commemorated Hwa Chong's founder's day by doing CIP work. My class was assigned to bring elderly citizens to visit Resorts World Sentosa.

I was initially rather worried, because i did not know what i could say to the elderly. I was assigned to a woman who could only speak Cantonese, luckily i could understand Cantonese! She was very excited to meet me and soon began telling me about her childhood, how she came to Singapore and her previous visits to Sentosa.

After this trip, i learnt the importance of taking care of the elderly and how much joy a simple visit like this can bring.
What does it mean to ‘put yourself in another person’s shoes’? What personal qualities are necessary to be able to see things as someone else does?
To put myself in another person’s shoes is to see things from their point of view, and to understand something by thinking the way they do. To put myself in another person’s shoes, I need to be unbiased and not prejudiced. I need to be able not allow my own bias to cloud my judgment.
What memories of childhood come to mind as you think about Scout’s experience?
As I read about Scout’s experiences, memories of my sister and me playing together, and exploring our neighborhood come to mind. We did many things that were similar to what Jem and Scout did, and we had lots of fun.
As you followed the action in the courtroom, which character did you empathize with the most?
In the courtroom, I empathized with Tom Robinson the most. He had one hand that could not be used. Furthermore, even though Atticus proved clearly that he did not rape Mayella Ewell, and that there was no way he could have done it, the other witnesses still did not admit that they were lying. In the end, even the judges made a biased decision and sentenced him as guilty.
What do you think is involved in making a fair judgment about a person or situation? Explain
I think that to make a fair decision, we need to know all the facts about the person or situation. After knowing all the facts about the person or situation, we need to consider various aspects. Firstly, we need to know the context in which the situation occurred, or how the situation came to be. Next, we need to consider the perspective from which we want to think about the person or value. Lastly, we might also need to know what other people think about the particular person or situation because we might have left out something in our judgment.

Essential Questions: Historical Background of 'To Kill A Mockingbird' by Harper Lee

Essential Questions: Historical Background of 'To Kill A Mockingbird' by Harper Lee

Knowing the background, cultural and historical background of a novel is very important. It allows us to gain a deeper understanding of message the author is trying to send. Their might also be some parts of the story that we would not be understanding, unless we know the situation when the author was writing the story.

Prejudice

Know: What do I already know about prejudice?

Prejudice is an assumption that is made about someone or something before having enough knowledge about it. Prejudice is very common. I have read about prejudice against blacks before.

Want: What do i want to know/learn about prejudice?

I want to learn about how people deal with prejudice and what effects prejudice have on people.
