Should there be a law against leaving your child alone at home? T2P5

I believe that there should be a law punishing parents who leave their child alone at home, especially if the child is below primary school age. There could be many things that can happen if a young child is left alone at home without adult supervision.

A child might get injured if left without adult supervision. There are many things that a child could do to injure himself or herself, as they do not take care of themselves properly.

If a stranger with ill intentions realises that the child is left at home alone, he could break into the house or tempt the child to go out, and the stranger would be able to do anything he wants to the child.

Thus, i believe that there should be a law that punishes parents who leave their children alone at home without any supervision. If both parents are working, they could either leave their kids with one of their neighbours or hire a maid to take care of the kid. If both these methods do not work, they can also leave them in a child care centre.

  1. I feel that this is a very interesting idea. However, I think that this might cause certain inconvenience for the parents. Not all parents have a job where they can just take leaves whenever they need to and go home to take care of their child, just so that they would not get punished. Also, what if both parents have to go overseas for a business trip at the same time?

  2. Dear Zhi Hao,

I feel that going to such an extent as having a law against leaving ones child alone at home is overdoing it. The possible scenarios that you have pointed out are indeed very true in today's society, but we must consider the fact that not everyone have the capability to hire a maid or afford to send their child to a child care centre, although the idea of having their neighbours or relative to baby-sit could be a feasible idea. Having the law would then add on to the burden of the poor parents. Moreover, it would be okay if the parents were to spend time with their children to teach them moral values and give them a holistic environment packed with love to grow in, allowing them to mature and become independent earlier compared to others. No matter what, this is a unique law suggestion that i have never heard off until now.

    Yours sincerely,
